Nipping at the heels of wiz-kid blues guitarist Kenny WayneShepherd, who debuted at age 18, comes 16-year-old Jonny Lang, the most soulful guitar slinger ever to make it out of junior high school. Lang's debut, much like Shepherd's LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, features a mix of choice covers and co-written originals. But whereas HEIGHTS leans in a Delta-blues direction, Lang's blues has more of an R&B flavour.
The Clavinet and Hammond B-3 organ on the title track and "Hit The Ground Running" help give LIE TO ME a funky swagger. As for influences, Lang's choices of Ike Turner's "Matchbox" and Syl Johnson's "Back For A Taste Of Your Love" show a taste for rousing shuffles and Memphis soul. Lang shows his commercial instincts by wrapping up the album with "When I Come To You" and the acoustic "Missing Your Love", two songs that wouldn'tsound out of place on a recent Eric Clapton album.

Another Amazon recommendation for me as Jonny Lang was not an artist that I'd come across before, but the reviews looked promising, so the CD was purchased.
The disc arrived early on a saturday morning so, to keep the noise level in the house down, on went the earphones to hear the opener, "Lie To Me" - well, what a scorcher, the man blew me away completely - superb vocals and a guitar that does not belie his tender years, indeed, one wonders what pact he made with the devil himself!
A couple of repeated plays of the opener and I launched into the rest of the set thinking that it could not get better, but it did!
"Darker Side" "Rack 'Em Up" "Quitter Never Wins" "Back For A Taste Of Your Love" and "Missing Your Love" all showing different aspects of this guy's musical prowess. In fact there is not a single bad track or filler here, this is a compact and impressive display of good solid blues work without the overly long or overly complex solos that abound elsewhere, and with that amazing vocal, this is an album that should sit in everyone's collection as it shows that there still is new, young talent emerging out there, even though they are deluged by the mundane mainstream that passes for music these days!

this cd has some of the greatest songs on it since led zep 2. Johnny's guitar and vocals are out of this world. Listening to the title track took my breath away evermy body vaguely interested in the guitar or rock or blues must get this cd. This album is a living testament to the dross the british music scene endures.

Jonny Lang has a great voice & can clearly play guitar well. However, the material on this cd is "thin" & doesn't really stand up to sustained playing; there are no nuances which emerge after several plays which, I believe, is the hallmark of a really good cd.
If you are an extensive collector of this genre then this should probably be in your collection however if you are looking for an outstanding blues-rock cd,look elsewhere
