Daniela Mercury is another of the really great young singers in Brazil (see also Marisa Monte). She got her start as a dancer, then made her fame singing during the carnival in Salvador, the capital of Brazil. Her ongoing identification with partying in the street adds much to her "street cred" in Brazil (or so I read). In any case, this is her 4th or 5th album, and it is an uptempo treat. I heard it first on a trip to Brazil while in a store -- it was new at the time and I had to own the CD as soon as I heard it. This CD mixes a little samba, a lot of strong Bahian drums/rhythm, a little reggae/calypso feel, and some solid pop production values into a very listenable, fun group of songs. It hits a groove with the first track and just keeps moving. It's one of the few CD's I will play two or three times in a row before I take it out of the CD player. After owning this, I bought the rest of her CD's, too, but earlier albums are a little rawer; her live album (Electrico!) repeats much of what you get on her studio albums. This is the one to own. This CD also has medicinal value: if you can play it without moving you're feet, you're dead.
