Product Description
From Amazon.com
A year and one album after being heralded as England's "next big thing," The London Suede is hurting. Forced by a lawsuit to change its name in the U.S. and suffering from the mid-recording defection of wall-of-sound guitarist Bernard Butler, the band's second album makes you wonder what the fuss was about.--dog man star is flaccid, melodramatic glam-rock that cribs even more heavily than the group's debut from vintage David Bowie. Brett Anderson's posing and emoting simply isn't enough to carry a tune, and none of the 13 songs here approach the fiery drive of the debut album's "Metal Mickey" or "Animal Nitrate." --Jim DeRogatis

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning. Complex. Beauty. Heroine filled infested class!!!, 17 Dec 2004
With a debut album which surely ranks among the greatest (and most important) in the history of rock 'n' roll, Suede continued their exploration of late 60s/early 70s glam-rock, formulating the more tender moments of 'Suede'; you will not find anything as Spring like tingling as 'Animal Nitrate' or 'Metal Mickey'. Instead, we are treated to a more darker side, present in the 9-minute drug filled haze of 'The Asphalt World' and the Floyd-like showdown that is 'We Are The Pigs' (a marker for the 'Velvet Goldmine'-like territory the band were to explore for the remainder of the album). The truimphant stomp of 'New Generation' shows just how ambitious Suede were at this point - expanding on the druggy razzmatazz of their debut. This is no original album but is well worth owning as a marker for bands such as Oasis, Blur (their ultra-rivals, but still amazing) and Elastica (not to mention the showman like observatory Pulp). Butler was probably the best guitarist of his generation and this album sees the mark of a legendary guitarist in every sense of the word. Relics of the '90s Britpop Scene! Long live Suede!!!
