This CD is the `Immortal Beloved' film soundtrack of Ludwig van Beethoven's music. It is a `Greatest Hits' compilation featuring the composer's best known pieces. The film title relates to a letter written by Beethoven to a mystery lady, who was the object of Beethoven's deep affections. Beethoven's music has grandeur, beauty, tenderness, explosiveness, majesty and splendour, in abundance. The track list includes excerpts of his sonatas, concertos and symphonies, but no string quartets (which some consider amongst his best works). There are fine performances by the London Symphony Orchestra. Anything composed by Beethoven is worthy of listening to, in my opinion. The CD cover has actor Gary Oldman's photograph and name emblazoned across the front, doing his best impression of the great man. I can imagine Ludwig giving a wry smile at this.

Beethoven took his art very seriously. The meticulous care he shows in composition, with the working and re-working displayed in his music sketchbooks proves that. There was an inner turmoil that drove Beethoven on. His lack of a settled family life and the increasing onset of deafness were major factors in his quest for triumph over adversity. He did come close to imploding and, despite his fame, lived at times in abject squalor, so much so that he was once mistaken for a tramp. I have heard it said that Mozart was the more intuitive composer. There may be an element of truth in this, but the fire and the passion is all Beethoven's. Above everything else Beethoven's music displays the strength of the human spirit.

Beethoven was excellent at improvisation and was also a brilliant pianist. On one occasion he was unable to finish a piano composition on time and had to perform to an audience. He went ahead with the performance, making it all up as he went along and even getting his assistant to turn the manuscript pages for him - all empty sheets (to the bemusement of the page turner, and amusement of Beethoven).

Beethoven's music and personality are closely intertwined. An uncut diamond may best sum him up. If you are new to Beethoven's music then this is a good place to start.
