5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! Grand poetry from Perahia & Co., 3 Oct 2008
By A Brahms fan (London, England) - See all my reviews
Why oh why has this disc been discontinued??? (it is currently out of print)
I managed to get a second-hand copy of this, and I personally think it's amazing in every way:

1) EXCELLENT MUSIC - Schumann's Piano Concerto (the so-called first romantic concerto in history) AND his 2 single-movement concert pieces for piano and orchestra, which I love, perhaps more than the concerto (it's not common to find all three on one disc).

2) EXCELLENT INTERPRETATIONS - The piano playing is first class, accompaniment and conducting no less so. This is Gramophone's recommended recording (according to their website). While I still think that Schumann didn't have the greatest talent for developing his [nonetheless excellent] musical ideas, (which is why, in general, I think he excels in shorter pieces), this recording has made me listen to the longer concerto with new ears. So many nuances in the music are brought out, and some orchestral details are exposed which I never knew were there. The concerto's last movement main theme is grand, but in some recordings the movement can sound tiresome and repetitive - but not in Perahia's hands!

3) EXCELLENT RECORDING/SOUND QUALITY - (done in 1994/97) this is probably as Hi-Fi as a normal CD can get, one of the best I've heard - beautiful.
Hopefully Sony will consider putting this title back into production...
