5.0 out of 5 stars Towering Achievement by Leon Fleisher, 26 Aug 2007
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)

No other concertos test pianist's technical capacity and artistic maturity than Brahms' two concertos. Both works can be absolute bore playd by wrong pianists!

Leon Fleisher's 1958 & 1968 accounts of the concertos can certainly stand test of time. Greatly helped by Szell's powerful and robust reading of orchestra part, Fleisher plays both concertos with depth and delicacy matched by few. Solid technique in fast passages and magical beauty in the slow movement. Both concertos well recorded stereo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Titanic performance, 9 Mar 2008
I've come to know this pianist, relatively unknown in UK, by his outstanding recordings of Schumann, Grieg & Rachmaninov's concertos and the sublime Beethoven recording with Szell. His Brahms concerto recordings are even more impressive and well surpass Gilels DG recording. Orchestra playing matches the pianist's titanic performance in grandeur and force. I've never known more overwhelming opening of 1st concerto. 60s stereo sound is pretty good.
