Product Description

From Amazon.com

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 26 Jun 2007
By ALMO (Hamilton, Lanarkshire) - See all my reviews
This is indeed a very special disc. Bernstein had a great affinity with Copland during the course of his lifetime both personally and professionally and in these recordings that affinity is there for all to hear. There is one point during the course of Appalachian Spring where he builds the strings up to such an emotional crescendo that many a listener could be moved almost to tears. In Rodeo, his pacing is quick throughout culminating in a rip-roaring Hoe-Down finale that is completely invigorating. Billy the Kid is also meticulously performed with Bernstein bringing out every detail in a way that is utterly captivating. Rather than going for the popular version of Fanfare for the Common Man, Bernstein opts for the alternative version which forms part of Copland's Third Symphony. Those looking for the definitive "greatest hits" package may be disappointed at the inclusion of this alternative version. Equally, when performed as a stand alone piece, some may feel that this alternative version lacks a bit of cohesion and certainly some will find the sudden key change disconcerting when taken out of the context of the Third Symphony as a whole. However, for me that's one of the reasons why this disc is so special - Bernstein is presenting us with his own view of what Copland's music is all about. One final point to make - these recordings are all between 40 and 50 years old, but the quality of the remastering is so good that you would struggle to believe it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aaron Copland - Leonard Bernstein - New York Philharmonic, 8 Feb 2005

I am not in favor of short reviews, yet the names speak for themselves. It is not conceivable that you missed any of them unless you are new to this planet. That being said let me toss in some of the music before my opinion. Appalachian Spring - Rodeo - Billy the Kid - Fanfare for the Common Man.

Now here is the cliché. If you are starting out and only buy one Copland, this is it. There are many great recordings, yet you are not likely to find this combination of Composer and conductor and music again. My favorite on the set is Fanfare for the Common Man; however the others come close. You should obtain this album for your favorites also.
