This volume 9 of the complete masterworks is one of my favourites in Horowitz' entire discography. Rachmaninov's works were recorded live at Carnegie Hall, 1967-68, and the performances display Horowitz' deeply Romantic, Titanic pianism. The second sonata is incredibly powerful and dazzling - few pianists can match such a daring reading.

Scriabin's Etudes and late works are studio recordings, 1972. Horowitz plays Etudes with stunning clarity and subtlety, and captures the transcendental beauty and the mystic atmosphere of the late works like no others.

If I could give 6/5 I would do it. I have never ever heard anyone play both Rachmaninov and Scriabin better than Horowitz, the great master for this sort of music, and a personal friend of Rachmaninov himself.
Horowitz is no good for the Vienna masters, but for the Slavic masters he is the man indeed.
On this cd we find a rejuvinated Horowitz after disappearing from the stage for about fifteen years. Horowitz was at the height of his emotional and technical skills, and he was already pretty mature. He is at the top of expressing the dark Slavic sentiments, full of exuberant explosions followed by melancholic and even sinister ambiances so very typical of rachmaninov, the master of introvert obscurity (check out his truly fantastic tone poem "Isle of the dead"), explosive romanticism and at times a bleeding heart.
Horowitz was capable of what is said of Paganini: to play the instrument with electricity flowing into the public. Often people thought Paganini had a pact with the devil: his soul for the violin. Horowitz was Paganini on piano. Nowhere is that more clear than on this cd. He is truly electrifying and develish. His technique, emotional depth, explosivity, drakness are simply unbelievable. His hold over the public becomes clear at the end of the second piano sonate of Rachmaninov, which is truly legendary. The public is totally loosing it...
When it comes to Mozart, Horowitz performs well at the end of his life, but one hears it is not his natural habitat, for Rachmaninov there has never been a better performer than Horowitz. Even Rachmaninov himself thought Horowitz did sometimes better than he himself.
His Scriabin too is simply mind blowing.
One advice: get this cd if you are into true Slavic sentiments.
