Mozart's six string quintets offer a challenge to CD manufacturers. They are too long to pack onto two discs, but not long enough to fill up three. Therefore, there's room here for the lovely clarinet quintet as well--you know the piece, it became ubiquitous owing to its use in the final M*A*S*H episode a few years back. The Juilliard Quartet was for many years the outstanding string quartet in America, and their performances of this music easily hold their own against those of their European colleagues. The proliferation of multiple performances of this music on CD shouldn't blind us to the existence of these great recordings, which become simply irresistible at budget price. --David Hurwitz
