No flashy interpretations or gimmicks - on this CD the music is allowed to speak for itself, especially through the beautiful tone of the clarinet in Jack Brymer's hands. This Krommer clarinet concerto is incredibly satisfying and uplifting - I much prefer it to the better known Mozart clarinet concerto. I particularly like the balance between the clarinet and the orchestra on this recording - there is no struggle to hear the solo instrument, and the purity and accuracy of Jack Brymer's playing is a joy. The Weber and the Wagner keep the mood going, and I'm glad they put the Debussy at the end as it is a bit quirky for my taste and I can skip it when I'm not in the mood. I had this on vinyl when I was learning to play clarinet in my teenage years, and I have been looking for it on CD for a long time. Although I was excited to have found it available at last, I was worried it might not sound as good as I remember it, but it was just how I remember it and I am very happy to have this recording in my collection and to be able to hear it again. If you like Mozart and Bach you will love the Krommer concerto, and I can't imagine a better recording of it than this one. Thank you ArkivCD for making it available again.
