5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific and largely overlooked performance of the Symphony., 25 Dec 2002
By Jeffrey Davis "jmd555555" (Sussex UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Abravel performed and recorded a considerable amount of music by Vaughan Williams but this wonderfully gripping performance of Vaughan Williams's greatest symphony has been largely overlooked, at least in Britain. It is possibly THE most exciting performance ever to be recorded and, in my opinion, has only one competitor and that is the 1950s recording under Sir Adrian Boult on Decca (recently digitally remastered and released as part of a boxed set of the complete symphonies).

Abravel's performance comes from the mid 1960s but is still finely recorded and absolutely not to be missed.
Abravel's pioneering recording of Dona Nobis Pacem is better known in the UK having previously released on CD coupled with a fine performance of Flos Campi. The American chorus sounds at home in the settings of poetry by Walt Whitman and Abravel conducts a moving and powerful performance of a work that is too easily considered episodic (due to the different composition dates of some of the component parts of the work). Infact Dona Nobis Pacem is a work that grows on you and the spiritually uplifting conclusion is, I believe, one of Vaughan Williams's finest inspirations.
This Vanguard disc is the only available coupling of these two works on one CD and represents an essential addition to the growing Vaughan Williams discography.
Don't miss Abravel's version of the Sixth Symphony, it really is a very gripping interpretation.
