Stefan Wolpe has truly come of age in the CD era. Long a cult figure in 20th-century music, vinyl recordings were jealously coveted by enthusiasts. Compact Disc changed all that, and of the dozen or more now available, this is as good an introduction as any. Wolpe's output stretches over 55 years to his death in 1972: this CD offers a decent cross-section, from the quirky 1929 Music for Hamlet to the free jazz-influenced Piece for Trumpet and Seven Instruments, Wolpe's last work and a terrific example of his gritty, energetic late music. Like so many of his peers, Wolpe approached serialism as a working tool, not as a religion: listen to the Piece for Two Instrumental Units (1962)--the drive and exhilaration of bebop aren't so far away. The Piece in Two Parts is more formal and cumulative, but with no lack of "give" in its rhythmic impetus. Anyone with an unprejudiced attitude to musical style, who values modern jazz and modern classical for what they owe to each other, will get a real kick from this collection--happily there are many more to investigate. --Richard Whitehouse
