Early Bobby O and still great, 12 Aug 2005
As soon as the first song starts, you know you're in for a vintage Bobby O production. That familiar thudding bassline and air-headed girly lyrics run through the whole album. Fans of The Flirts should definitely check this out. Actually, the production is a lot more minimal than later Bobby O productions, and I think it benefits from this, as it accentuates the robotic synthesized rhythm of the music just that little bit more. Many fans draw attention to the track "Spys" in particular, and it's certainly a memorable one, built almost entirely around a heavy rolling bass line in the "I Feel Love" mode that Bobby also copied for a lot of other songs such as "Native Love" by Divine. Shame they are all short versions though, especially as "Desire" was released in an extended version on single. In fact, there are some other Roni Griffith tracks that never appeared on the original album, such as "Mondo Man", "I Want Your Lovin", but of course Hot Records have done their typical short-change job and not supplied any bonus tracks whatsoever. Let's hope that Unidisc from Canada, who have re-released all The Flirts CD's with bonus extras, might feel inclined to do the same for Roni, as her total output would probably fit comfortably on one 80 minute package. But anyway, if you like the sparser, thumping disco beat of the early 80's, give this a try. Roni, where are you now?
