Shostakovich's piano quintet doesn't seem to be as well known as his wonderful cycle of string quartets. But the quintet offers the same kind of directness and emotional force that drives many of the quartets and the addition of the piano adds another tonal color that contrasts effectively with the strings. Perhaps it's that combination that allows the piece to move so organically from moments of rage to moments of despair and back again. Of the performances I've heard, this one by the Moscow Quartet and Constantine Orbelian is the most powerful and moving. Orbelian produces some thundering moments that almost make the piece feel more like one of Shostakovich's symphonies than chamber music. The coupling with Schnittke's piano quintet is an imaginative one that makes a fascinating comparison between two generations of Russian composer. Schnittke's piece is not as immediately accessible as Shostakovich's, but it's more direct than some of his other music. And once you adjust to Schnittke's more modern approach to the ensemble the sincerity of the emotion experessed in the piece (I believe it was written in memory of the composer's mother) comes forcefully through.
