'Faramondo' is one of Handel's later operas and like many of the later ones suffers from a fairly poor libretto but still contains some excellent music. John Ostendorf's Handel recordings on Vox and Newport Classics are often dismissed by critics and it is true that they are of variable quality and enjoyment of them often depends on how well one likes the ubiquitous singers and conductors who crop up in nearly all of them. In my opinion, 'Faramondo' is one of the most successful.

This time the conductor is Rudolph Palmer and whilst his account of the score is not terribly exciting, it's a decent enough version. Stalwart soprano Julianne Baird sings the heroine Clotilde - she's good but I have become a little allergic to Baird's voice in recent years and would like to hear someone else in this music. Another stalwart, D'Anna Fortunato sings the title role and makes quite a good job of it which is a relief as some of this singers work on prior recordings was not so good! Drew Minter and Jennifer Lane are also there - Minter sweet but bland as always and Lane smoky and reliable as always. Bass Peter Castaldi and soprano Mary Ellen Callahan round out the main cast and both are good but not remarkable.

This is really quite a good recording and will do nicely until something better comes along. I just wish they didn't feel the need to cut bits out and replace them with other (unwanted) bits from miscellaneous Handel concertos - it's annoying and unnecessary!
