Delerium's music is a tale of two halves: their earlier albums are chock-full of dark, beatless, vocal-less atmosphere, while their later work is more joyful and crammed with female guest singers. Chalk and cheese. For the former sound, think collapsing cathedrals, lightless caverns and immense, empty, beautiful landscapes. For the latter, think Deep Forest without the twee bits, or Enigma with a modicum of originality and without the European naff. So, this album, their second, is very much in the "old" Delerium mould. It doesn't knock your head off immediately - the first two tracks, Gaza and Requiem, are slightly underwhelming, sounding more like Leeb and Fulber's beaty industrial alter-ego, Front Line Assembly, but once you hit the more atmospheric tracks like Morpheus and the glorious Faith, you'll be popping cushions in front of you for those moments when your jaw hits the floor. There are half-a-dozen tracks of genuine greatness here, and those few more industrial tracks aren't bad at all, just probably on the wrong Leeb/Fulber album. Overall, it's well worth picking up, reaching some truly awesome peaks in places.
