5.0 out of 5 stars Great teaching/performance CD, 10 Mar 2003
This is one very groovy CD for dancing and it is also a useful teaching CD - full of Rai music (which has a very distinctive sound) from all over the Arab world. ('Rai" means 'opinion' in Arabic.) It contains intrumentals of more contemporary songs as well as several pieces of folkloric music with lots of great rhythms and varying tempos to suit every level of dancer. As well as the more traditional Arabic instruments, the compositions also use Western instruments such as saxophone, trumpet, and bass. I found the liner notes extremely useful as they describe a bit about each song and the rhythms in it and the region they come from. The first track "Gani Lasmar" is just fantastic both for as a teaching piece and also for choreographing a Khaleegi style dance to - it has a very addictive upbeat melody and a steady Adani rhythm which, as I can testify to, makes you move completely involuntarily (everyone will want to dance to this!); "Othrak Ma-ak Othrak" starts with a beautiful oud improvisation and is slower tempo which is much more soulful - it has a more complex orchestration and so makes a good intermediate/advanced piece; "El Hawzi" is a beautiful piece of music in Shaabi style with steady rhythm and a wonderful flute melody suitable for intermediates or as a teaching piece. "El Ataba Gazaz" is uses the wonderfully lively and joyful rhythm Fallahy and is a very famous Egyptian farmers wedding song, it has clear distinctions between orchestra and makes a good performance piece for beginners and helps them get to know the Fallahy rhythm; "Wah Wah" again uses the Adani rhythms but has a completely different sound and style to the first track, and is more complex so is great for intermediates and above. "Eddakka Ya Aris" is another famous Egyptian farmers wedding song using the Fallahy rhythm and is again great for teaching or for beginners; "Mawwal El-Oshaa" is an interesting jazzy piece played by the late great trumpeter Samy El-Babli which will give intermediates and more advanced dancers a different style of music to choreograph a performance piece to; "The World is My Oyster" is a superb combination of the saxophone with the Naggazi rhythm resulting in a very powerful piece with great depth of feeling. You will recognise the last track "The Star Collector" on this album if you have any of the "Stars of Egypt" videos - this is a beautiful new composition and the violin section in this is just exquisite. Highly recommended.
