I bought this set about 3 years ago and have enjoyed it tremendously. After reading some of the reviews on Amazon.com, I thought I'd do my best for the readers of Amazon.co.uk. The reviewers on the .com website pull this recording of Elektra to shreds. Please! This is not a Puccini or a Mozart. Elektra is one of the most shocking, deep, heavy and positively frightening operas ever written. Elektra is all about interpretation. Marc portrays Elektra with subtly, seductiveness and intensity. Nilsson's Elektra is more dramatic and powerful and psychotic. Both are outstanding! I am not writing this review to place one higher than the other, rather to point out the high ranking of both.

Sinopoli brings out the shear terror through the orchestra. This massive orchestra never sounds as though it is going to topple over. Voigt and Schwarz are in top performance. Schwarz makes an incredibly intense, but subdued Klytemnaestra. Voigt is truly impressive. Her scene with Electra (Elektra: Ah! das Gesicht! ), is so powerful and beautiful.

This set is highly recommended, along with the very different Solti recording with Nilsson and Resnik recording.

PS: another brilliant Strauss recording that I came across is the DVD of Rosenkavalier with Te Kanawa and Bonney (cond. Solti). Superb!
