Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Some artists grow into a sort of proprietary relationship with certain pieces of music. If anyone today owns this concerto, it's Martha Argerich. She's recorded it three times and this latest version seems to sum up an entire lifetime of living with and loving the music. Not only does Argerich simply find more in the notes than almost anyone else, she also does it with a sense of complete spontaneity and naturalness. She's also the most exciting pianist alive, which certainly doesn't hurt in such dazzling music. Claudio Abbado is one of her regular concerto accompanists and he knows better than to try to take over an Argerich performance. This is her show and he gives her the kind of support she needs to feel free to work her interpretative magic. --David Hurwitz

5.0 out of 5 stars The best, 19 Dec 2005
By Mr. J. E. Matthew "jackmatthew2005" (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews

I've listened to dozens of reecordings of this work and two stand out. One is currently unavailable (browning LSO, Ozawa) and this is the other. It's perhaps the 'safest' choice for this concerto as it combines excellent sound with a sharp and exciting performance. It's hard to describe how excellent it really is but I can say that this recording has been widely acclaimed by a wide range of critics so it's a CD that you can buy in confidence.

1.0 out of 5 stars Listen before buying., 4 Feb 2008
By Mr. R. T. Haynes (York United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This performance is not to my taste. I found it mannered, erratic and unpleasant. Again and again I found elements of the performance intrusively surprising, especially the 'rubato'. I strongly advocate hearing it before you buy it. Don't assume, as I did, that it will be a solid classic performance. Also, the overall soundscape is muddy, lumpy and just generally unpleasant. One man's meat, but poison for me I am afraid.
