Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In previous decades, an opera singer would have committed commercial suicide by daring to sing songs from the musical theatre, but not anymore. The magnificent Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel did his serious career no harm at all when he agreed to record this selection of 20 songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1995. Of course, he has yet to appear on stage in any of their shows, but that is not the point. Eight of the partnership's 10 shows are represented. The album opens bracingly with "Oh What A Beautiful Mornin'" from Oklahoma and ends inspirationally with "You'll Never Walk Alone" from Carousel. Terfel sings the title track, "Something Wonderful", from The King And I as if it were autobiographical. He characterises little but delivers everything as if he were wearing tails and enunciates mostly as an Anglo-Saxon, although he is undecided about the middle syllable of "Some Enchanted Evening". He employs the most magical sotto voce in the business sparingly and to greatest effect in "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music: he sings as if he might damage the fragile thing if he did not whisper. Paul Daniel conducts the English Northern Philharmonia and Chorus of Opera North who are suitably camp in "Nothin' Like A Dame". --Rick Jones

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent singing with great expression and tone colour, 27 Jun 2001
By A Customer
What a performer this man is - and he shows how a seasoned opera/lieder performer can also sing the 'Songs from the Shows'. I have never heard such a powerful performance of You'll Never Walk Alone, and the new, to me anyway, Come Home Joe, is very moving. Bryn Terfel is blessed with a wonderful vocal instrument and, what is more, he certainly knows how to use it. He has the ability to colour the voice, makes sure every word can be heard and I, for one, wouldn't want to hear anyone else sing these after hearing Bryn. He sings with such immense feeling for the character. I would say to anyone who has not bothered to listen to this disc, you really don't know what you are missing. I have been playing it for many of my friends who don't really like 'Opera Singers', but I can tell you that they have all bought the disc after hearing Bryn sing "Something Wonderful, Wonderfully".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, 3 Feb 2001
By beatlebazza (Somerset) - See all my reviews
All too often opera singers sing popular songs like an affected Italian uncle. Bryn manages to overcome that obstacle by ensuring that he leaves behind his opera training and brings in the right diction for each song. The choice of songs is superb and the backing is first class.

These songs are classics and are treated as such by Bryn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb matchmaking in Terfel's R&H recital

It may sound superflous for opera singers to sing Rodgers & Hammerstein, but Bryn Terfel's recital proves an exception to this perception. Read more
