4.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Cello Collection, 6 Mar 2004
By P. Western (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As well as showcase for the talent of Rostropovich, this double CD offers a chronological survey of the interaction between cello and orchestra over two centuries (indeed, one or both of the Vivaldi concertos - the inner and outer track listings contradict each other - are not performed by Rostropovich). Having said that, the pieces here are not quite repertory stalwarts (apart from the Tchaikovsky) but fine compositions finely and expressively played nevertheless. This collection is thus a very good way of collecting these slightly lesser-known works.

In the Baroque pieces by Vivaldi and Tartini, I would have preferred slightly less well-mannered accompaniments but they are by no means saccharine.

The Boccherini and Tchiakovsky are very good, though the high point for me (and reason for purchase) is Shostokovich's second concerto. Not as well known as no. 1, it is equally appealing. Just as dark, too, though more reflective and less agitated. Like the almost contemporary 15th Symphony, it finishes with a bizarre, insect-like clicking. The concerto was written for Rostropovich and is played with characteristic intensity.

A final word on Bernstein's Three Mediations: one of those welcome discoveries where a work of which I had no expectations turned out to be an unexpected masterpiece.
