Product Description

CD Description

1988's STATE OF EUPHORIA became Anthrax's first gold-certified full-length album shortly after its release, as the bandwas introduced to a wide new audience by opening up a stateside tour for Ozzy Osbourne. But although the band picked upnew fans, many of Anthrax's old guard felt that this sixth overall release pushed the band in a less-than-savoury commercial direction. Though not as strong as 1986's AMONG THE LIVING, STATE OF EUPHORIA still proved to be a much-needed alternative to much of the soft glam metal being proliferated by MTV and pop radio at the time.
In keeping with the band's past couple of releases, Scott Ian's lyrics are quite thought-provoking and imaginative. "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" addresses the ripping of older bands by startup metal outfits; "Make Me Laugh" is about two-faced televangelists; and "Now It's Dark" goes inside the mind of the deranged characterFrank Booth from the movie BLUE VELVET. The album's best-known song however, is the anthemic cover of Trust's "Antisocial", which spawned a popular MTV video. But Anthrax showed that it retained its lighthearted side with the final two songs, "13" and "Finale".

3.0 out of 5 stars State Of Mediocrity, 18 May 2003
By 2ey (Dublin, Ireland) - See all my reviews
Anthrax, while not as popular as fellow thrashers Metallica & Slayer, are among the finest speed metal bands you are ever likely to here. This album spaned some classis tracks which helped 'Thrax win over their enormous fanbase,(ie-"AntiSocial","Make Me Laugh","Out Of Sight, Out Of mind" & "Misery Loves Company") but for the most part this album does not display the capabilities of Anthrax, the first handful of songs go well & the middle portion of the album is decent, but by the time you've reached the closing few songs of the record it's all began to sag a bit, like a bottle of soda gone flat.
While it can be bought off the strength of the classic tracks I mentioned previously, especially "Anti-Social" which is a metal classic in it's own right, a newcomer to Anthrax would be advised to check out an Anthrax compilation rather than shell out for this harrowingly average record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anthrax - Its a must, 6 Dec 2002
By Steveo (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I first heard Anthrax at a gig in which they supported Motorhead. I was a fan from the first cord struck. Therefore, on my English teacher's advice, i went out and bought this album. It is amazing. From the beginning string piece into the powerful drum beat and head banging guitar cord sequence of 'Be All, End All through to such classics as 'Anti - Social', to which the chorus must be sung out load, regardless of where you are or what your doing. Into heavier tracks as 'Misery Loves Company' in which once again Charlie Benate(drummer) puts an amazing beat mixed with a classic Dan Spitz(Lead Guitar) solo. Joe Belladonna's (Vocals) distinctive voice rings out, mere perfection for the band. 'Finale' is an amazing ending track to an amazing album. This is a must for any thrash metal fan, and an excellent first album for the new Anthrax fan. Brilliant.

3.0 out of 5 stars WORTH BUYING FOR' ANTISOCIAL' AND 'NOW ITS DARK', 26 Jan 2001
By A Customer
ANTHRAX WERE ALWAYS THE NEARLY MEN OF THE 'THRASH' GENRE. NOT AS BRUTAL AS SLAYER,AS ACCESSIBLE AS METALLICA OR MEGADETH, THIS ALBUM THREATENED TO BE THERE BREAKTHROUGH ALBUM, AS THE EPONYMOUS 'BLACK' ALBUM WAS FOR METALLICA. UNFORTUNATLEY THIS WAS NOT TO BE AND DISAPPOINTINGLY THE STONGEST TRACK IS A COVER OF TRUST'S 'ANTI-SOCIAL'.THE NOW DEPARTED JOE BELLADONNA CONTINUES WHERE HE LEFT OFF FROM 'AMONG THE LIVING',WHILE DAN SPITZ SHOWS HE IS NOT IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS METALLICA'S KIRK HAMMETT OR SLAYER'S KERRY KING.(I REMEMBER AN INTERVIEW WITH SPITZ A FEW YEARS BACK WHERE HE CLAIMS STICKSMAN CHARLIE BENANTE IS A BETTER GUITARIST THAN HE).WHAT ALWAYS MADE ANTHRAX STAND OUT, HOWEVER,WAS THE RHYTHM SECTION OF BENANTE ON DRUMS,FRANK BELLO ON BASS AND THE REMARKABLE RIFFMEISTER SCOTT 'NOT' IAN ON RHYTHM GUITAR.IT SOUNDS AT TIMES AS IF HE COULD CUT CONCRETE WITH THAT GUITAR.HOWEVER EVEN HERE IAN'S CONSTANT RIFFING IS NOT ENOUGH TOP CARRY THE ALBUM.THERE ARE MOMENTS OF BRILLIANCE, NOTABLY 'NOW ITS DARK','ANTISOCIAL' AND 'MISERY LOVES COMPANY' BUT THE BAND AT THE TIME SEEMED MORE PROCCUPIED WITH WEARING SHORTS AND CULTIVATING THEIR CARTOON BAND IMAGE.SCOTT IAN CAN BE HEARD AT HIS BEST ON THE EP'ATTACK OF THE KILLER B'S' AND SOD'S LIVE ALBUM 'LIVE AT BUDOKAN' IN PARTICULAR WHERE THE SHACKLES SEEM TO HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND HE DOES WHAT HE DOES BEST-DELIVER KILLER RIFFS AS OPPOSED TO THE MORE RESTRAINED SOUND OF ANTHRAX.
