Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

There's little in Boy, U2's 1980 debut, to suggest that this was a band bent on world domination. Indeed, there's a charming, if naive, coming-of-age urgency in songs such as "I Will Follow", "Stories for Boys" and "Out of Control" that may startle listeners more familiar with U2's latter-day bombast and stadium-scale theatrics. Bono's viewpoint, still tantalisingly vague and wide-eyed, showed that his penchant for strident polemics hadn't yet gotten the best of him; his anthems are those of a yearning Dubliner barely out of his teens rather than those of a world-weary multimillionaire. The band's sometimes-ragged musical chops work in its favour here, gently burnished to then-fresh new-wave sheen by producer Steve Lillywhite. If the Edge's dense, effects-laden guitar work seems overly familiar, it's only because this album was such a key influence on the whole "rock of the 80s" sound. Though not quite as moody or musically accomplished as October, arguably the band's first masterpiece, Boy still ranks as one of U2's best albums. --Jerry McCulley

CD Description

BOY announced the arrival of four young men from Dublin whowould conquer the world in short order. Bono and company were barely out of their teens when they recorded their first album, and their youthful vigour lights up every track here.Full of ambition, driven by a politicised (though not yet explicitly so) sense of purpose, the songs give listeners an idea of what it's like to come of age in a strife-torn country and count on rock and roll as your means of transcendence.
Bono's clear, strong voice rings out over the already-anthemic arrangements. Though none of the band members had yet developed much instrumental facility, their commitment andemotion are palpable in the simple-but-perfect parts they play. "I Will Follow" was BOY's calling card, unfolding with brashness and a sense of wonder as it chronicles the journeyfrom boyhood to manhood, a trip the band had only just taken recently. BOY stands as an auspicious beginning to a long, successful career.

5.0 out of 5 stars There must be an error here........., 16 Oct 2006

(REAL NAME)
U2 would never allow the re-structuring of any album so the fact that Into the Heart has gone from the listing and I will Follow has moved to the bottom must be a mis-print or admin error as all other sellers I find online are showing the orginal listing.
This will always be my favorite album of all time. I was 21 when I bought This and October on the day that October came out. It was a time when New Wave was turning into New Romantics and new 'rock' needed rescuing. So along came U2. As is sometimes common with debut albums, this is a 'greatest hits' of early U2. Out of Control, Stories for boys, Twilight being the only songs from a catalogue of early singles that were re-recorded with Steve Lillywhite for this album. Other songs like my favorite 'Electric Co.' culled from live sets. It was a 5* album at the time making all of the music papers top listings for the year and although now I see Actung Baby as their pinnacle musically I will always go back to the days when this couldn't leave my turntable or car cassette. Its one of those classic can't take off albums where each track flows effortlessly into the next and every track gap seems perfectly timed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Facinating, 29 Jul 2008
This review is from: Boy (Audio CD)
Really nice package with some great insights into the early sound of U2.

Unless you happen to have the 6" vinyl singles from the Boy album most of the tracks on the bonus CD will be new to you. Speed of life is an out-take from the Boy session and fits in with the vibe of the album perfectly. There's also killer live versions of Boy/Girl and 11 o'clock tick tock.

The only weird one for me is Cartoon World which is a bit of an oddity.

In terms of cost I think this package is good value. 15 to 17 quid is only a bit more than what you used to pay years ago for a single CD album.

Oh, and the Boy album itself is brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars My favourite U2 album, 21 April 2001
I recently dug out my old U2 CD's to let my sister listen to them. I got into U2 during the mid 80's whilst still at school, and listening to this album brought back some memories. Boy was definately my favourite U2 album with some great tracks. A day without me, Twilight and The electric co. particularly being my favourite. These songs came from a time when they were making there way into the pop/rock world and show great creativity and passion. U2 have become too big for my personal taste these days, I don't think they'll be playing my local pub again.
