Product Description

CD Description

Released in 1990, the two-CD set CHRONICLES was the first "best of" compilation from Rush, spanning their recording career from 1974's self-titled debut until 1990's PRESTO. Although the RETROSPECTIVE VOL.1 & 2 discs from 1997 contained a lengthier and slightly different track listing (and boasted better sound due to remastering), CHRONICLES is still a superb collection of Rush's hits. Rush is primarily known as a progressive band with a leaning towards science fiction themes, but many forget that their roots lay in the bluesy riff-rock of Led Zeppelin and Cream. Look no further than the early cuts "Finding My Way", "Working Man", and a live take of "What You're Doing" for the proof.
Drummer/lyricist Neil Peart replaced original member John Rutsey after the debut RUSH, and the band immediately shifted direction, developing their trademark sound, with an emphasis on more technically and lyrically challenging material. Some of the finest hard rock ever recorded can be found on CHRONICLES--"Closer To TheHeart", "Tom Sawyer", "The Spirit Of Radio", "New World Man", "A Passage To Bangkok (live)", and "Distant Early Warning", to name a few. There's simply not a weak track included on CHRONICLES, which makes it a fine collection of Rush classics.

5.0 out of 5 stars RUSH through time, 19 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Any devotee will know why this compilation gets the 5 star treatment. For the uninitiated there is ample proof of why the band has a cult following and why they are vastly underrated by the mainstream critical elite.

This compilation charts their early works through until the end of the 80's - but it does not include their latter albums ,which mark a return to a heavier guitar driven sound.

As with any - yes any , Rush offering the music is off the highest integrity. The drum ,bass and guitar combos of Peart , Lee and Lifeson ( apart from disc 1 tracks 1 & 2 ) combine with their own songwriting skills to bring an edgy , unique and ultimately rewarding collection of both classic and progressive rock.

There are weaknesses to be found ( The Big Money , Mystic Rhythms ) but they are few and far between.

All in all an essential collectors item for the fan and a satisfying experience for the novice.

Like Rush this is five of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars rush through time, 19 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Any devotee will already know this is a 5 star piece of work. To anyone else this compilation shows why rush are a mistakenly underrated rock act.

Although the album doesn't pass into the last decade and their more recent guitar- driven return to their roots , it still captures the essence of the band and their music.

As with any Rush offering the music is of the highest integrity. The drum , bass and guitar combo of Peart , Lee and Lifeson ( apart from disc 1 tracks 1 & 2 ) give unbroken songwriting continuity to bring an edgy , unique and ultimately rewarding collection of rock music.

There are weaknesses to be found ( The Big Money , Mystic Rhythms ) but like Rush this compilation has to be five of the best.
