4.0 out of 5 stars The years have been kind, 15 Mar 2000
Back in 1988, the Mission were ready to be the next big thing in rock circles; the presence of John Paul Jones from Led Zep on production duties also promised much. At the time, as a teen goth it must be said, I was left a bit unphased by this second album.

The intervening years have been kinder to this than their other efforts though, and in this day and age, the tag 'goth' doesn't carry much significance any more, so yeah, it's stood the test of time okay, it's a pretty good rock album by a band who at the time meant every bit of every sound they committed to tape.

"Beyond the Pale" is right up there with "Tower of Strength" in their cannon of great anthems, and contrasts like "Black Mountain Mist" and "Breathe" show a knowing maturity that suggested they were aiming for a more complete and rounded album.

In a TV interview around this time, Wayne Hussey commented that there weren't many proper bands left around. I'll overlook his comment about U2 being one of the key bands of the time (because they were far up their own arses even then) but certainly as far as the Mish were concerned, they sounded like a real band, both on record and playing live. The shows were great, they always looked like they were out to conquer, and 12 years later this album is still a fine testament to their endeavours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Mission, 30 April 2003
By A Customer
Children was and still is The Mission's best album to date not that any are bad. This album's accessability is due to the crossover it makes between the goth and rock music of the time. There is an underlying dark side which is lightened by fine string arrangements and complex melodies which, combined with liberal use of distortion and Wayne Hussey's distinctive voice (with angelic backing provided by Julianne Regan who went on to All About Eve), give a diverse and highly intense sound which is suitable to many moods.

Every track on this album shines in it's own way with Tower of Strength and Fabienne being the stand out tracks. Even to this day, Children doesn't sound dated as many other bands of the time do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mission Accomplished, 2 May 2002
By A Customer
After the first couple of worthy efforts from The Mish back in 1986, Children was a giant leap forward in terms of production and overall appeal. It's certainly the best of their generally excellent album-history and Wayne 'No Way Am I Pretentious' Hussey is remarkably restrained and could'nt have whiffed a joss-stick for weeks prior to this recording.

As a previous reviewer has stated, buy this is you're going to buy any Mish album. It is dark yet strangely uplifting, always brooding but never dull. The Mish were always one step ahead of their other Goth contempories (eg, the Nephs, AAE, Gene Loves Jezebel, Dead Can Dance etc) and albums such as this were the reason why.
