Yello exploded like the sun with STELLA, their claim to big-time fame. Dieter Meier and Boris Blank's modus operandi was creating a sophisticated type of dance music that managed to have wide appeal without sacrificing its strangeness. Meier's vocals, often more songspiel than singing, jump from film noir and back again. From the twinkling starlight, disco grooves of "Vicious Games" and "Domingo", to the shuffling synthesizers and air of menace broached on "Desire", Meier's vocals suggest more than a whiff of panther-esque sexuality.
Of course, STELLA's piece de resistance is the vocoder-laced chunk-funk of "Oh Yeah", which has shown up in films from FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF to THE SECRET OF MY SUCCESS. An effective little chiller, it features Meier's most perverse (and studio-processed) vocal FX layered over outer-space synth washes, rattling bass sounds, interstellar whistles and cries in the night, and a seriously pumping beat. Its three minutes of pure dancehall ecstasy doesn't diminish the rest of the album a bit, but it's quite a centrepiece all the same.

This was the first YELLO album I ever heard, and I still think after all these years that this is by far and away the best of all the YELLO albums. It covers the styles of music that YELLO excells in, such as the exciting and driving beats of "Domingo" and the classic "Oh Yeah", but also demonstrates the haunting and complex pieces such as "Stalakdrama", "Desert Inn" and Koladi-ola". A top quality stereo reveals some subtle and rich work. The other songs on the album such as "Desire" and "Vicious Games" are typical YELLO fare - impressionistic and distinctive.
I have since gone on to buy many YELLO albums, but still rate this as the best - if you have never heard YELLO before, this is the album to buy. Unfortunately, they are largely unknown here in Australia, so it can be very difficult to find YELLO albums, so snap them up whenever you get the chance.

A lot of the other Yello stuff is a much-of-a-muchness but with Stella Deiter Meir and Boris Blank have created an absolute gem. The lyrics sometimes come with that awkward quirkiness of non-native English speakers but the music is wonderful in any langauge. A great mixture of beat and tune that mix rich synth sounds with good old drums and electric guitars. Big mood changes from the mesmeric, haunting Ciel Ouverte to the driving rock of Domingo. The opening track Desire sets the scene and it just carries on from there. A great album from start to finish. If you want to add a bit of Yello to your collection then your search starts and finishes with this album.

Stella is a wonderful album to own, a timeless work of art - playful and endearing with every listen.

For me the very best of Yello's music transports you into a different landscape of beauty and wonder, filmic soundscapes surround you with spoken word vocals with almost child like story telling, you know that excitement you get when as a child you wake up on christmas or birthday morning, and discover the presents and gifts you receive, Yello's music is similar to that , they great you with audio gifts - the speakers give birth to a life of rythem, filmic backdrops, and out of this world sounds.

oh yeah is a classic, ciel ouvert and sometimes are cinematic works of audio art, the whole album gets played and played again and again over the years, and never weakens with time.

The reason Yello stay head and shoulders above everyone else in similar genres (if there is anyone in similar genres which i doubt there is) - is because of the intricent way the music is produced, like a fine wine, or very high quality produced piece of machinery, car, or watch , the finer details are always given thought , the layers of sound with echoes, deep rumbles, whispers, morphing strings, etherreal moods, human feel beats breath life into the music.

Most music over the last 20 years has been like factory made suits, suits made by machine - Yello however are the finest hand made suit ever made in music terms.

Even to this day they are still producing some of the best music after 20 years or more
