Product Description

From Amazon.com

Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of T.S. Eliot's poems may not have become Broadway's longest-running musical without the original cast to begin the raves. Which is why every aficionado of this theatrical classic will tell you that this is the one you have to own (although they'll probably tell you that you need the import Original London Cast album as well, the show having originated on London's West End and all). But this is the one with Betty Buckley singing "Memory"--the song that turned her into a star--and the two discs are appropriate for the musical that helped set off Broadway's "operatic" phase. The show is now also available--in its entirety--as a home video, but the music still stands on its own, though some cynics have wondered why so much music only produced one hit standard. --Bill Holdship

5.0 out of 5 stars Now And Forever, 18 Mar 2000
By A Customer
CATS is a fabulous musical, with all the fashion it needs in order to survive. And don't think that it has become Broadway's longest-running musical for nothing! Part and parcel of the appeal of CATS is its wonderful and memorable Andrew Lloyd-Webber score. Of course, "Memory" is not the only memorable song, but you should consider others like the Prologue song, Old Deuteronomy, Mr. Mistoffelees... well, the list is too long for me to continue going. This score is well-presented on this exuberant Broadway Cast Recording, which by rights should be considered to be the finest recording of the score ever made in the whole history of the musical. The principals, including Betty Buckley, Terrence Mann, Ken Page and others, are all fantastic. They all give character to the music and sing both with a crispness of tone and an appealing freshness that lasts forever. The orchestrations also contribute to the success here. They are more atmospheric than the London cast recording, which I would discuss with you another time. Also, the original music of "Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer" and the Ballad of Billy M'Caw have been replaced with more atmospheric music in their respective scenes. The only quibble about here is the omission of the Pekes and the Pollicles, a so-called senseless song that does not seem to go anywyhere and unjustly depried of the chance to complete this whole recording. Even so, I still LOVE this enchanting version of this enchanting musical, and I would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who loves musicals or Andrew Lloyd-Webber in general. Remermber, despite the closure of the Broadway production, let the memory of the show live again and again, now and forever, through this soundtrack. POSTSCRIPT: The current London production uses this edition of the music.
