Product Description

CD Description
Morrison spent much of the '80s and early '90s venturing into the mystic, exploring the spiritual side of his muse to the virtual exclusion of his blues/R&B roots, on a series of dreamy, often beautiful albums. Those that longed for the wailing Celtic bluesman of yore were overjoyed by the release of TOO LONG IN EXILE. Here, Van rediscovers his roots, covering great R&B tunes from the past and knocking out a few of his own.
His lascivious growl invests the horn-driven "Good Morning, Little Schoolgirl" with just the right touch of menace. He simmers the ingredients of the potboiler "Lonely Avenue" perfectly, wringing emotion from the tune without descending into self-pity. On the brooding, minor-key "I'll Take Care Of You", Morrison intermingles devotion with darker emotions to chilling effect. His own tunes are strong as well, especially the semi-autobiographical title tune, which paints a picture of Van as the eternal expatriate of the spirit, trying to reconcile his search for heaven with his place on earth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Van sings the blues, 13 Aug 2007
This is an underrated album in my book; as close to an old-fashioned blues album as Van has ever got, and all the better for it. As the earlier reviewer said, it does have a few superflous tracks (it came out on 2 LPs and should have been one probably). However it has some wonderful singing on it (Van is on inspired vocal form throughout) and the band is tight and totally on top of the material.

The standout tracks are probably the covers of Lonely Avenue and I'll Take Care Of You, both of which have some gritty vocals and the later track has some harmonica playing that's up there with Junior Wells. Of the Van-written tracks, Ball & Chain and Til We Get the Healing Done are very strong.

This album clearly has a 'trajectory' too, ending with two joined tracks as Into The Music once did. Whilst it's not in the league of that all-time classic album, it's essential listening to any Van-fan who likes raw blues based numbers and is interested to hear something of the roots of the Van Morrison phenomenon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth finding, 19 Mar 2007

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This 1993 album from Van Morrison is a great mix of Blues, Jazz and R&B influences. The man himself is in great vocal form throughout the album.

There are a few weak tracks, noteably the duet with John Lee Hooker on Gloria which just doesn't work. I love JLH but his singing on this just seems completely out of place. So it would have been better with 2 or 3 songs less. However that aside its a fine collection of songs with Van Morrison demonstrating his musicianship (Guitar, Alto Sax and Harmonica), song-writing, and his ability to put his own stamp on other peoples songs as well.

The supporting band includes Georgie Fame on Hammond Organ and backing vocals. Hopefully this will get another release in due course, but in the meantime if you like Van the Man this is well worth hunting out.
