5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL SONGCRAFT, 16 May 2003
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
All Elton John's early 70s masterpieces are collected here, from the elegant and sensitive Your Song and Daniel to the bouncy Honky Cat and the fast-paced Crocodile Rock. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting is a rocker in similar vein, while Rocket Man and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road are beautiful ballads. Plus the famous Candle In The Wind which had many incarnations - this is the original, but there was a 1988 version too and of course, the Diana adaptation which by now must be the biggest selling single of all time. Although Elton John has created an impressive body of work in the years since, I still consider these songs to be his best. They hold a special emotional appeal for me. I know Your Song has been covered by many other artists but I'm surprised that not more of these elegantly crafted songs have been interpreted and taken up the charts by others.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the true masters, 14 Nov 1999
By A Customer
This is truly a man who needs no introduction. One of music's most established and esteemed ambassadors. This CD effectively presents some of his best work. (It would take a huge box set to display ALL of his great work.) If you don't already love Elton John, you will after listening to this CD. "Daniel" is very catchy and brilliantly performed, but more than that is it very stirring. It is a song by a young man singing to his brother who is no longer alive. You can't help but feel for the man. "Candle in the Wind" is another stirring tribute to a special person. Elton John has always expressed his love for Marilyn Monroe, and nowhere so well as in this song. (Of course, this is the song that he later adapted for Princess Diana after her tragic accident.) The rest of the CD is brilliant. Some of the best from one of the best.

4.0 out of 5 stars The best Elton John songs were NEVER the hits, 4 May 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Greatest Hits [VINYL] (Vinyl)
The idea here is to present all of Elton John's Top 10 hits from his early period, circa 1970-1974, so there is no arguing that this greatest hits collection does indeed do that. But I still want to make the argument that this album does not include the best songs by Elton John and Bernie Taupin during this period. There are two songs from Elton John's self-titled "debut" album, "Your Song" and "Border Song," but nothing from "Tumbleweed Connection" or "Madman Across the Water" and I will certainly take "Love Song" and "Burn Down the Mission" from the former and "Tiny Dancer" and "Levon" from the latter and put those up against any two tracks on this collection (for me the best two are "Rocket Man" and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"). For that matter, go back and listen to "Sixty Years On," "The Greatest Discovery," and "The King Must Die" from that first album and see if you do not think those songs are not better than half of these hits. I can go through the play lists of "Honkey Chateau," "Don't Shoot Me I'm Just the Piano Player," and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and do the same thing. One of the reasons to buy Elton John albums in the early years was that there were always great songs, not to mention much better songs, besides the certified hits. Check out those first half-dozen Elton John albums from this period and listen for yourself. You will see that I am correct in this assessment.
