5.0 out of 5 stars Classic post-punk electro industrial music., 23 Sep 2001
By jmwalsh@rocketmail.com (Belfast, Ireland) - See all my reviews
James Ray first appeared on The Sisters of Mercy frontman, Andrew Eldritch's 1986 side project The Sisterhood : GIFT. The same year Ray released a mini-album of post-punk electronic pop influenced by Suicide and the Sisters and sounding a lot like Depeche Mode eventually would. This mini-lp was released under the moniker James Ray and the Performance. The Performance, consisting of Carl Harrisson, who later played keyboards on Eldritch's 1988 lp Floodland.

This release, on Fifth Column records, combines the mini-lp with the entire of 1992's James Ray's Gangwar CD, Dios Esta De Nuestro Lado (God is on our side). Dios is a much heavier mix of guitars and synths, but retains Rays obsessions with god, the United States, cultural imperialism and chugging synthesizers.

Enough cannot be said about these forgotten indie classics, my only criticism being that for contractual reasons, non of Ray's 1991 lp, 3rd Generation, (Surgery Records) is included.

Overall it is a hypotising mix of trance-like synths, softly spoken vocals and sliding distorted guitars. Buy this CD.s
