About the Artist
In 1974, Ben Mattijssen of Munich Records got involved in promoting folk music in the Netherlands. "As folk music in my country started to boom shortly after, timing was perfect, and in no time my agency represented the best and most respected names in folk music. Soon I was asked to help organise the Winterfolk festival, a two day event that took place in the concert halls in Dordrecht and Arnhem. Another prestigious festival took place at the Muziekcentrum Concerthall at Utrecht."
"Most of the recordings on this album were recorded at those two festivals in 1980 and 1982. Four extra bonus tracks by the Tannahlll Weavers are added to this album and either were never released on CD before or are alternate takes. The Silly Wizard track 'With My Dog & Gun' is one of the few recordings of the group on which Dougie McLean can also be heard. Dougie was a member of Silly Wizard for only a short time. Just before Clannad performed at the Utrecht Folkfestival, Eithne Brennan (now known as Enya) joined the group at the age of 14. Nicky Ryan, Clannad's manager at the time, told me that this was her first public appearance. The Battlefield Band are probably the only folk band with a possible world record to their name; once I booked for them no less than 18 concerts in five days."
"Andy Irvine is accompanied by the fine guitar player Gerry O'Beirne and is in excellent shape with the songs 'Creggan White Hare' and 'Plains of Kildare'. Kornog, Sonerien Du and Dan Ar Bras are from Brittany, France, but coming from this area in France, they are iust as Celtic as the Scottish and Irish musicians on this album. Jamie McMenemy, lead singer of Breton group Kornog was once a membef of The Battiefield Band. "
"Dan Ar Bras started his musical career as lead guitarist for Alan Stivell. After leaving Stivell, he joined Fairport Convention for a while, and has since recorded many fine albums and performed solo and with his own band through the years. Sonerien Du (Breton for 'Singers in Black') are a very popular 'Fest Noz' group. Every year they give over 250 concerts in Breton towns and villages. Their concerts always end in massive dancing. "
"Over one hour of Celtic folk music. I hope that you enjoy the music as much as all the visitors did"
