Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Go-Betweens approached Tallulah quite rightly convinced that their previous album, Liberty Belle, should have made them superstars (it didn't). Perhaps because of this, they over-reach themselves once or twice here--needlessly substituting a drum machine for Lindy Morrison on a couple of tracks, and coming up with one ill-conceived and transparent attempt at writing a mid-1980s pop hit ("Cut It Out"). Elsewhere, however, business as usual: beautifully written ballads ("Bye Bye Pride"), pop fizzbombs that could have been immense hits for The Monkees ("I Just Get Caught Out") and arch, evocative character sketches ("The House Jack Kerouac Built", "The Clarke Sisters"). Decorated throughout with the oboe and violin of newly inducted Go-Between Amanda Brown, Tallulah is an absorbingly flawed diamond. --Andrew Mueller

CD Description
The fifth Go-Betweens album, TALLULAH (named after film actress Tallulah Bankhead), introduced a fifth member to the band. Violinist Amanda Brown cemented the band's move toward the inclusion of strings that had begun with their last album. With this addition, the interplay between instruments and vocals is even more lush and pretty than ever, even on vaguely unsettling tracks like "The Clarke Sisters".
Standoutsinclude "Right Here", a pristine pop classic complete with soaring violins, a catchy chorus, and jangling guitars; "I Just Get Caught Out", a rocker propelled along a popping bassline; the beautiful "Bye Bye Pride", one of the band's morespectacular songs that captures a moment so well you can see it ("A white moon appears/Like a hole in the sky/The mangroves go quiet"), and "Hope Then Strife", with its spoken verses and sung choruses punctuated by Lindy Morrison's spare drumming and some gorgeous flamenco guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of pop's great lost classics., 14 Feb 2001
By A Customer
...Though that description could be applied to most of the Go-Betweens albums, Tallulah is a particularly good example. One of a triple whammy of great eighties records (along with 'Liberty Belle...' and 'Spring Hill Fair' which I also recommend wholeheartedly) it's probably the most out-and-out pop album the band or any of its members have made thus far. Gorgeous melodies, appealing twin vocals and some damn great songs are found within; 'Bye Bye Pride' and 'Right Here' on Grant Mclennan's side, the heartbreaking 'The Clarke Sisters' from Robert Forster, and in 'Spirit of a Vampyre' we truly have the greatest cry of "hey!" in recorded history courtesy of Forster's arch croon. When this album was released it sold about twelve copies... more than a decade later, you can help redress the balance: it's the only decent thing to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Commercial Stab, 8 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This is indeed a flawed masterpiece and once again is a so nearly classic. Perhaps their least consistent album, the problem seems to stem from the fact that both songwriters went off into very different styles and commercial compromises were made in an attempt to hit the big league. However there are lots of strong songs here, namely the singles 'Right Here' and the sweeping (anthemic!) 'Bye Bye Pride'. There is less focus on the warm guitar sound of the usual Go-Between LP's and instead newcomer Amanda Brown enriches (but occasionally clutters) the songs with violin and oboe. Quiet highlights of the album include 'The Clarke Sisters', a dark sensual tale set in a feminist bookstore , and the brooding death's door melodrama of 'Spirit of the Vampyre'. Tracks like these are fantastic and make the album a must for fans. However the flawed single 'Cut it out' (and a couple of others) jar the overall feel. Still a pretty good album and it did crack the UK top 100!! (selling at least 12 dozen copies).

4.0 out of 5 stars bad bleach, sweet songs, 11 Jun 2006
By jenny (glasgow) - See all my reviews
not the absolute disaster a lot of folk would have you believe, but it takes a couple of listens. but then again, the go betweens take a couple of listens full stop before you really appreciate them. right here and cut it out are definitely not among the best go-b's tunes, but they're balanced out with the naive loveliness of bye bye pride and the arch, sexy little numbers like spirit of the vampyre and you tell me....summery, fresh, lovely and, as it always is with the go betweens, these songs swoon and shimmer into your head and just won't leave. the only really unforgivable thing is robert forster's nasty bleach job on the sleeve, but that horror can be cancelled out by concentrating on a picture of him in his usual isabella rossallini glory if that makes you feel any better.
