A handful of modern film composers obviously enjoy giving cues on their albums witty titles. Scanning the back of this disc and seeing "Turkish Rumba Splat Silly Fat Lamb" ought to tell you to which camp Young belongs (Elliot Goldenthal is another, by the way). The beauty of this comedy of the farcical kind is that the music itself is funny. Using Henry Mancini-style jazziness, Young conveys cool for Bill Murray's patsy detective. In the title cue there's some infectiously slinky Pink Panther-like material, with a catchy "Watch That Man" vocal. When it reappears for further inept bumbling, there's a cheesy Hammond Organ too ("Goose Neck Chili"). For the opposition stands a tender saxophone in "Wandering Heart", blowing between muted horns and brushed cymbals (Murray's a cute Clouseau clone you see). Reading those track titles, you'll be smiling before you press Play. And you still will be 40 minutes later. --Paul Tonks
