5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous recording of superb music, 17 Jan 2002
E J Moeran's earliest forays into longer form works were all written for chamber ensembles, and the three works here are excellent examples of his early achievements. The first quartet, written in 1921, shows strong evidence of the twin influences of Ravel and English folk music, which Moeran was heavily engaged in collecting at the time. It is full of delightful lyricism.

The second quartet presents a problem to historians - it was found amongst his papers after his death and has never been accurately dated. Musical analysis would place it either as an early work or, paradoxically a very late work. In fact some performers have even suggested that the two movements are years apart, almost as if written by a different composer. Yet they work together and present a lively celtic lyric charm. The second movement is almost three movements in one, striking a distinct parallel to his Oboe Quartet of 1946.

The String Trio of 1931 is very much a pivotal work in Moeran's output and marks the first moves from his early to his mature style, leaving behing the Delius influences which were apparent in much of his 1920's output. This was the first piece completed after the death of Moeran's close friend, composer Peter Warlock, and the air of morbid gloom which pervades the central movements of the trio appears to be a reaction to Warlock's suicide. However he pulls out of this into a wonderful whirling jig to end with real verve and flourish.

This was the recording which announced the arrival of the Magginis on the world stage, and remains a vital addition to any music lover's collection.

I just love this CD.

I wish Moeran had been able to write more as he's a gem of a discovery
