4.0 out of 5 stars A Recording That Brims With Fun., 21 April 2001
By A Customer
This is the best of recent recordings of this popular opera. The whole cast catch the fun of the piece and give vivid characterisations to their roles. In the title role, Roberto Servile sounds a bit gruff and strains on the high notes of the famous Act I cavatina, but there is real spark in his performance and he portrays Figaro with all the boisterous gusto Rossini intended. Worth a special mention is Angelo Romero, who sings magnificently as Bartolo. Listen to his account of "Un dottor della mia sorte", it is wonderful and one of the best accounts of this aria on CD. Will Humbug conducts a fast paced and spirited account which draws out the fun in the score. While perhaps not the most scrupulously sung account, this version of the opera sparkles from beginning to end. If you want a more starry cast in this opera, Callas and Gobbi are in fine form in a rip roaring account (text cut) on EMI. There is also an excellent recording (uncut) on RCA with Robert Merrill heading a superb team. Avoid the Hampson recording at full price on EMI- it is a dull reading and seems to go on interminably. If you must have a DDD recording go with the Naxos version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking CD, 29 May 2001
By A Customer
This is a superb recording. I have been listening to it at least twice a day after buying it the other week. How can one cast cram so much irreverent fun and brilliant audio acting into three discs?? Highly recommended.
