5.0 out of 5 stars what a fab cd! , 15 Oct 2008
By D. E. Potts - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm currently discovering Martinu and this cd is where I started. It has persuaded me to get more works. I would describe his chamber works as a wonderful mixture of Dvorak folk melodies, Bartokian rhythm, mixed with early Beethovian idiosyncrasy; although not breaking new ground still original enough to keep you absorbed without thinking that you've heard it all before. The simplicity of the adagio and last movement of the piano quartet for example or the 1st movement of the Viola sonata are soaked in original melodies which are a breath of fresh air in the atonal era that they where written. The String quintet is an earlier piece and shows his more expressionistic side, this chugs along with the strings cutting through the air like early Shostakovich.
All in all, there are lots to recommend with this cd, including the world class chamber musicians who have gathered at the annual Chamber music festival in Australia where this was recorded. This is great easy going, uplifting music from a very gifted composer from the sometimes very harsh world of 20th century chamber music.
I am working my way through his string quartets at the mo. Dvorak/Bartok fans will love them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good collection of works, 29 Oct 2009
The collection of works is good but the sound quality is a little strange. The opening seconds of the disk feature a quick turning up of the recording level, which is quite laughable, but the works are played very well, so it's a great shame. Most of these works are available elsewhere, so it can't really be recommended. It may have been recorded live, it doesn't state this on the disk so it probably wasn't, but the works were recorded in under 3 days at a chamber music festival in Northern Queensland, Australia.
