I would have given this pleasant collection 4 stars, but the recording quality, although not bad, is typical mid-1990s Naxos piano; a bit recessed and distant. Thomas Hlawatsch, an Austrian, plays these pieces very well.

I always find a composer's Opus 1 to be of interest, and here we have Janacek's; Variations for Zdenka (1880), written for the fourteen year-old he was later to marry, unhappily it turned out. So this is not like Brahms' Opus 1, but its pleasant enough.

Then we have some dances from 1892/1904, a very short piece from 1928, some gymnastics-inspired (!) work from 1893, and then the very appealing "In the Mist" from 1912.

The CD finishes with the chamber concertino for piano, two violins, viola, clarinet, and horn from 1925. This was seemigly inspired by owls and squirrels.

OK, this is not essential Janacek, but a worthwhile 55 mins.
