1.0 out of 5 stars Bargain Berwald that rarely rises above the routine, 6 Jul 2008
This is unexceptional playing, but herein lies the problem. Berwald's musical idiom needs a certain degree of fire in order to engage the attention. The Helsingborg Symphony on this showing are a competent band but little more. Kamu's direction is often strong on detail (woodwind solos) but poor on impetus and overall shape. Berwald's style does not need further episodic treatment. The overture fares quite well but the symphonies lack bite; the lyrical treatment of Berwald's yearning themes approaches the yawn factor. This unusual composer is better served elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Berwald - an almost forgotten composer., 14 Jan 2009

(REAL NAME)
I can assure you that though the Helsingborg S.O. may not be the VPO or the BPO (who is?) they play this music passionately very well under their fine conductor Okku Kamu. Perhaps there is a misunderstanding of Berwald's style. Basically if you like Schumann and Mendelssohn with a healthy set of trombones this will suit you. If he hadn't been Swedish instead of German he would be much better known.
