After Beethoven's and Schubert's last string quartets at the close of the Classical and the start of the Romantic period, nothing truly significant happened in the genre until Bartok. There are, however, a few works worth any music lover's attention. Some of Mendelssohn's efforts match Mozart's for charm. And then there's Borodin. Written in a Classical vein, these two works combine compositional inventiveness and depth, with beautiful, accessible melodies and a Romantic emotional undercurrent.
They are among the first works of Classical music I truly liked, and I still like them, 25 years later.
The Naxos version is typical of the label: High quality performance in very good sound quality.
Highly recommended to any lover of the string quartet genre.

This cd is an absolute bargain! Borodin is a must in any collection and this is playing of the highest calibre. Exciting, fresh and worth a few hundred listens.
