I loved this CD to bits. Every voice is superb, the orchestra magnificent. 'L'amor fu consiglio' (By love's consolation) is now one of my Top Ten Tunes. The opening and first aria by the Angel are spectacular, and the characterisation of the Devil is great. The contrast between the expansiveness of the concept, and the sound, and the intimacy of the few voices, makes La Resurrezione very involving.

Easter oratorios and Handel usually mean 'Messiah', often regarded as Handel's finest work (and undoubtdely one of his most popular). 'La Resurrezione' predates 'Messiah' by a quarter century and can certainly stand alongside. Composed at a time when opera was officially banned, it's nevertheless an opera in all but name. Here Les Musiciens du Louvre give full value to a sparkling rendtion of this splendid work. It opens with a lively overture, then there is a quintessential Handelian number where an angel demands the surrender of Hell backed by drums and trumpets. Handel was a religious man, so the seriousness of the Passiontide story is treated sensitively and with feeling - and expressed splendidly by the performers - but interspersed with lively foot-tapping tunes at appropriate moments.
