These are absolutely wonderful performances. Goldberg was famous as an interpreter of Mozart, and his approach combines a fine sense of structure with some beautifully affectionate phrasing. I have several sets of these sonatas and would always listen to him with respect and pleasure. But I have to say that it is Lupu's playing that sets these performances above nearly all others. It is Mozart playing of the very highest distinction. As a team they are extremely well matched. Recommended most strongly - as good, I think, as their companion set on Decca of the Schubert violin/piano works, which is also outstanding.

Mozart wrote 42 sonatas for violin and piano. This set contains all 16 sonatas written between 1778 and 1788 - the most important ones. Excluded in this set are the 16 very early sonatas of 1762-1766, which are in an old style and not interesting. It also excludes the sets of variations of 1781 K360/374b, and all the incomplete sonatas and fragments. The style of these performances is very gentle and poetic. The instruments are extremely well balanced without the piano overpowering, but all the same it remains in the foreground, which is as it should be, since these are really sonatas for piano WITH violin in an equilibrated dialogue of equality for both instruments. And here in these performances the balance is perfect. Both Lupu and Goldberg concentrate on beauty of tone and delicate and poetic phrasing in interpretations, which are extremely creamy and silken. These performances will at times carry you off into the Divine world. This is the reference set for these works in my opinion, although some of these sonatas are also very well performed by Grumiaux and Klein and by Szeryng and Hameling, however for consistency in all of the works the Lupu and Goldberg performances are the best interpretations and have the best recorded sound and correct instrument balance of the 3 choices. A lifetime investment. Essential recordings!
