1. Interstellar Overdrive
2. Nick's Boogie

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

For those terminally smitten either with the Floyd or with those psychedelic Sixties in general, this multi-media double-CD set represents a feast of generous proportions. For anyone else, though, it's more like yesterday's curled up prawn sandwich--a light snack that could trigger indigestion. On one CD there's a rambling sixteen-minute version of Floyd's classic "Interstellar Overdrive", plus the even more meandering "Nick's Boogie", a faintly Eastern instrumental. Both tracks are for completists only, as is the accompanying CD-ROM. In its favour, the CD-ROM is easy to navigate, enabling rapid access to the various interviews (Mick Jagger, Julie Christie, David Hockney etc) and to another lengthy live Floyd performance of "Interstellar Overdrive". Students of the then-fashionable cine-verite style of shaky hand-held camera-work and dippy Sixties wisdom dispensed by icons of the age will find it riveting, but it's definitely an acquired taste. --Johnny Black

CD Description

This 1967 recording provides a fascinating glimpse into theinner workings of one of the most innovative ensembles in rock history. It features Syd Barrett-era Floyd performing its barnstorming signature tune, "Interstellar Overdrive", andwhat sounds like an embryo version of "Set the Controls Forthe Heart of the Sun", from A SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS, here called "Nick's Boogie". Both songs included here are epic-length improvisatory pieces that shift from spacy ambience to full-blown freakout and back again, using very basic tools. Synthesizers hadn't come on the scene yet, so Rick Wright relies strictly on his snake-charmer organ riffs to enhance the spooky, ethereal mood. Barrett utilizes pure, acid-drenched weirdness to make the most unearthly sounds possible with very little electronic enhancement. Legions of groups would take their cue from the advances made by Pink Floyd during this time, and LONDON makes it easy to see why.

3.0 out of 5 stars what happens if i put my fingers here?, 21 Jul 2001
By A Customer
This is (i think) the earliest legally released Floyd performance, and it shows. Although they had already aquired they're own individualistic psychedelic sound they had not yet signed a proper record deal. As a result the production is not as good as Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Without the wild stereo tracking of the album version of Interstellar Overdrive it is slightly less exciting. However, I should think this is the closest you can get to a decent quality recording of a live Interstellar Overdrive, without buying a boot. Nick's Boogie is deservedly less well known as Interstellar, meandering all over the place, and led largely by Mason's floor toms. As for the video its not a straight live video but features clips from the film this was a soundtrack for, Lets all Make love In London. Aside from a po-faced John Lennon blanking an autograph hunter, you can admire the remains of Roger's acne, Nick's awful roll neck, Rick's lovely tie, and syd's bizarre genius guitar playing. Only buy this if you are obssesed with the sixties and very early floyd.

5.0 out of 5 stars This music reflects my youth and my time on this earth, 27 Sep 2008
One of the problems of getting older are people from younger generations judgeing your youths music and art from the perspective and values of a completely different time.
For me the early Pink Floyd are a delightful memory.
A time in my youth when there was so much energy, hope and optimism for the world and the future.
There was such a spontainous and free life then... where anything goes and the Pink Floyd's music represents that era.
But please don't compare this cd to things composed years later. It just doesn't work.Either you get it or you don't.
Just listen and enjoy!Pink Floyd - London 1966 - 1967
