Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's no coincidence that UB40's biggest hits and most pleasurable songs have been their reggae rock remakes of other acts' songs--Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine", Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe", the Chi-Lites' "Homely Girl", Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight", and so on. Only one of the 11 numbers on Promises and Lies is a cover tune, but the band's remake of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" is a real treat. Featured in the film Sliver, the ballad gets a new momentum from UB40's horns and rhythm section and finds its obsessive quality reinforced by the reggae-dub echoes. The album also includes "Reggae Music", a delightful dancehall workout which neatly balances Astro's reggae toasting against Ali and Robin Campbell's sweetly sung pop soul hook. Unfortunately, the other nine songs are full of steady grooves and admirable sentiments but little in the way of melody or fresh ideas that might separate them from hundreds of similar reggae exercises. --Geoffrey Himes

4.0 out of 5 stars In the true UB40 tradition, 21 Mar 2007
By Jay "The Amazon Reviewer" (Mauritius) - See all my reviews

I'm a big UB40 fan and I can easily say this album represents the best of their studio work. The band has been haunted by the commercial success of their cover hits but this album clearly demonstrates that they can write and arrange great original work. "Things ain't like they used to be" is one of the best UB40 singles never released. Other standouts include "Promises and Lies", C'est Levie", "Higher Ground" and the two last tracks. Overall, one of the 90's most underrated classics. The Elvis remake of 'Cant Help Falling In Love' is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the Best UB40 album yet, 17 Feb 2004
This really is the best UB40 album short of their best of collections- it might be even better, because you hear the true reggae rhythms UB40 excel at, rather than the safer pop-Reggae mix record producers know will boost sales. It is a testiment to this album that six of the songs (out of 11) find themselves onto the best of UB40 vol. two, three of them onto the Very Best of UB40, and three were remixed on the Fathers Album in 2002.

Widely regarded as the best UB40 album, if not ever, than certainly of the 1990s, the only competition coming from Labour of Love 2. This album proves UB40 do not need to cover songs to produce great tracks- higher ground in particular is an amazing tune, and it really took me by surprise that it was written by the boys from Birmingham themselves- the same goes to Bring me Your Cup. Aside from that, c'est la vie and promises and lies add the conscience of this collection, sorry and a long long way add the energy. Can't Help Falling in Love is the track many people will recognise, but it is by far not the best tune on this album.

If you like UB40, buy this album. If you like Reggae of any form, buy this album. That's all there is to it.
