5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic performance from both Rostropovich and Vengerov, 6 Mar 2001
By A Customer
Whilst I had heard both of these pieces before, I could not have said I was particularly familiar with either. This has changed because of this recording, which is full of energy and bravado, yet stunningly lyrical in the slower passages. For anyone who has a liking for either composer, I urge you to listen and fall in love with this recording. Both are quite different to what you might expect from the composers, yet familiar enough to recognise where the music is coming from. Vengerov's showy style suits the solo part exceptionally well - you could tell the pair of them very much enjoyed the performance. Their compilation of the second concertos (also teldec) is further worth a listen - not quite up to this recording, but still stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning composition, 5 May 2006

(REAL NAME)
Being 19 and having listened to the likes of Mozart and Hummel whilst I was 18, upon listening to the music on show here I was completely spell-bound. I never knew that music like this was possible or had yet even been conceeived of. Prokofiev is the composer that made me realise what boundaries can be broken in classical music.

The first thing about him is that he brought me to enjoy slow passages in a composition which I have always found difficult to do. The lead violin is often so insanely frantic, staggery and sharp and jittery that when the slow passages arives the true tragic or else blissful essence of a piece comes across and the feeling is very much present.

The other thing is that his music is not beautiful and yet it is not the gracefully hammer-like fist of Beethoven. It's quirky, it always seems on the verge of breaking apart or else collapsing. People have always said that Mozart's music truely does touch upon the heart of all men and women, yet I think that he touches upon the hearts of only Christian men and woman (which was everyone in those days).
Yet Prokofiev's music shows a genuine compassion for the human condition. Anything in life that is complex man struggles with ferociously so much so that everything almost seems beyond our control. It is only when we forget these complexities that we can have some form of comfort.

The other thing that this composition did for me was give me some admiration for the instrument that is the violin. I always believed that it was either used simply in the orchesta or else by overly-romantic Spanish men. Yet again, Prokofiev showed to me that so much more can be done with the instrument. All in all, I have learnt a great deal from buying this superb recording.
