Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
A nostalgic homage to the glory days of cinema and of a young boy's inspirational friendship with the local projectionist (Philippe Noiret) in a small Italian town, Cinema Paradiso is one of the best-loved of modern European films. Winner of an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, the full three-hour director's cut is an indisputable masterpiece. Having already in the 1980s scored such emotionally intense dramas as Once Upon A Time in America and The Mission, Ennio Morricone was inspired to write one of his warmest, most heartfelt and moving scores. His main theme, set for piano and solo violin over strings, is gloriously bittersweet, marvellously evoking a past which can never be revisited except on screen. He contrasts this with a more urgent, questing theme in "Runaway, Search And Return" and the inescapable circling terror of "Cinema On Fire". Introduced on delicate woodwinds, the utterly beguiling "Love Theme" is actually by Andrea Morricone and fits the mood of the score to perfection. Cinema Paradiso marked the beginning of a fruitful creative partnership between Ennio Morricone and director Giuseppe Tornatore; the similarly themed The Star Maker (1995) being perhaps the most memorable of their later ventures. -- Gary S. Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry in music., 2 April 2000
By Luis Peres "Luis Peres" (Portugal - Europe) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is probably the most beautifull soundtrack ever writen. The only bad thing about this Cd, is the graphic look of it, wich is trully awfull. But inside, you'll find one of the most beautifull, powerfull and moving love themes ever writen. And if you love the movie, and yet you don't own this soundtrack, my question is...WHY ! Get this at once, and buy the movie also. If you haven't seen it ,after listening to this Soundtrack ,you'll want to see it. Trust me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moved by beauty, 11 Jan 2009
By Bob Salter "Sandman" (Wiltshire, England) - See all my reviews

I watched the film "The Holiday" recently with my wife and two daughters. It was Christmas and I was outnumbered. That's my excuse and I am sticking to it. In the film the Jack Black character arrives in his very expensive looking car at the address where the Kate Winslet character is staying. The music he is playing in the car is the main theme from "Cinema Paradiso". He refers to the great Ennio Morricone as the composer. Great he most certainly is, but he is even more than that. The man is a genius whose gift of being able to musically convey every nuance and emotion that a film contains is simply remarkable.

Morricone has been composing music to films for half a century now. The quantity he has produced is prodigious. Yet the quality has never been sacrificed. His music is now played on many classical compositions. He is probably best known for his Spaghetti Westerns. Which is a little unfair to say the least. Recently when on holiday in Marrakech, Morrocco a security guard at a ruined palace I was visiting was awoken from his slumbers to to the very distinctive "The Good the bad and the Ugly" on his mobile. This is perhaps the one that most people will hum or whistle when you mention Morricone's name. In a recent documentary for BBC radio Morricone asked the interviewer specifically not to ask questions on Spaghetti Westerns. Obviously he feels strongly that his other great work has been overlooked due to his long involvement with this genre.

I have three of his soundtracks which I feel to be his best. This is a personal choice amongst his huge canon. "Once Upon a time in the West", "The Mission" and what I feel to be the pinnacle of his lifetimes work "Cinema Paradiso". They are all breathtaking in their scope and imagination. He has a unique style but the range and variety within that is astonishing. I sat down the other night and quietly listened to "Cinema Paradiso". At the end my faith in humanity was restored and it was such a life affirming experience that I felt compelled to write this review. No one apart from Mozart has the same ability to move me. Watch the films ending with the beautiful compilation of famous screen kisses to Morricone's beautiful music and then tell me you were not moved. If not then you must have a heart of stone.

Make no mistake Morricone's reputation will only grow with time. He will be remembered as one of the centuries great composers and this is his masterwork. The whole track is wonderful listening with no weak sections. Just sit back, relax, and enter the unique world of the master that is Ennio Morricone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful score, 9 April 2007
Having listened to the score of Cinema Paradiso a couple of times, I simply felt compelled to write a review, something I haven't done before. My love of the music started when I borrowed the movie from a family member; whilst I certainly found the film charming, for me it was the music which made me sit up and pay attention. The score contains a number of recurring themes which I found myself humming for days. Of particular note is the 'love theme' which is played in a variety of styles within the score - my particular favourite is when the theme arises in the track 'Runaway Search and Return', a romantic theme played within an exciting and fast-paced track. If you appreciate melodic tunes, which soar with the full power of an orchestra at times, then you cannot do much better than this!
