CD Description
Miriam Makeba is the undisputed queen of African music, as evidenced by her nickname "Mama Africa". However, her life has been coloured by her homeland's struggle, which led to her 1995 quote, "I am only happy when I sing". When Makeba is performing, her joie de vivre seems to blossom with each turn of a phrase. Her powerful voice can distill suffering intocelebration.
This live album documents two concerts Makeba gave in 1970 and 1977. Highlights include the politicallycharged "Malcolm X", and the ballad "Forbidden Games", a song about the pain of love. The climax of the album, however,is probably her cover of Brazilian songwriter Jorge Ben's well-known tune, "Mas Que Nada". Featuring a sensitive and complementary band, LIVE, like most of Makeba's work, is a triumph of the spirit.
