Product Description

CD Description

ILLADELPH HALFLIFE represents an advancement in hip-hop that has been a long time in the making. Like Gang Starr, A Tribe Called Quest and the Wu-Tang Clan, the Roots sought to widen hip-hop's scope with their debut album, DO YOU WANT MORE?!!!??!, which incorporated live instruments and a jazzy funk feel. Critics praised it, but the band's positive messagesdidn't quite get through to rap's core audience (nor, it should be noted, did the Fugees' the first time around). It was as if the band had started teaching before its students were listening.
With ILLADELPH HALFLIFE, the Roots have opted for a closer relationship with the boom-bap sound of truehip-hop, and they've managed to do so without letting go ofthe elements that made their debut special. Vocalists BlackThought and Malik B. still inject lyrical science into their rhymes, and here they're joined by fellow rap-educators Q-Tip (on "Ital"), Bahamadia ("Push Up Ya Lighter") and CommonSense ("UNIverse At War"). With ILLADELPH HALFLIFE, the Roots should finally make a very significant mark on the world of hip-hop.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Roots confirm the potential shown on their debut., 26 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Preceded by the banging single 'Clones', Philadelphia's finest signalled that any comparisons with other so called hip-hop bands are seriously misjudged on 'Illadelph Halflife'. This can only be a good thing as it shows The Roots are even more innovative than previously thought. They've moved into the territory of making real hip-hop with a live band and fixing their relationship with any fans not convinced of their commitment to street sounds. This record is altogether harder than their first album - 'Do You Want More?'. That it was not done at the expense of their thoughtful lyrics and broader appeal is a considerable accomplishment. Perfectly formed, 'Illadelph Halflife' deserves greater love from hip-hop fans as this is a real hip-hop outfit producing intelligent and thoughtful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars DEFINATELY the best hip-hop album ever, 31 May 2006
This album is good. So good I might buy it again, It's that good. I can 100% recommend this album for anybody who likes hip-hop, Jazz, Rap, or anything Urban. If you are a fan of The Roots and don't have this album, label yourself the biggest cretin in the world and buy this album pronto.

It is impossible for me to single out the best song; they are all 10/10 in their own rights. Sure, you might think that nothing is perfect, therefore this cannot possibly recieve 5 stars. It is perfect. Thats why this album recieves a "Riddick Seal of Approval".

5.0 out of 5 stars The best hip-hop album ever???!!!, 21 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This is the best hip hop album I know and by the best hip hop group I know.It excels all their work to date. What I love about this group is their ability to make each album so different from the last and from every other artist. This is certainly not to everyone's liking as it is quite a dark album but I have never heard an album, which has grown on me more and has so many chilled rhymes. I have owned this now for 4 years and even now I listen to it atleast 3 times a week (perhaps a little sad). I urge you to buy this album if only to give you a different perspective on hip hop (the non commercial side), which is so much better than all the crap on TV today. If you like this album then 'Do you want more???!!!' and 'The Tipping Point' are must haves aswell. I hope this album does for you what it did for me!
