5.0 out of 5 stars Tense Submarine Based Thriller, 9 Jan 2009
By Andrew Kerr (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Crimson Tide [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
Directed by Tony Scott, Crimson Tide was released in 1995 and stars Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman.

The film is based on a US nuclear submarine (the Alabama), that's ordered in to Russian territory after nuclear attack is threatened on the US. The Captain (Hackman) and his First Officer (Washington) disagree over the appropriate action to take, when an Emergency Action Message regarding missile launch, is cut off in mid transmission. Tensions mount between them, and as the command structure breaks down, mutiny comes about.

I'm not a great fan of 'military' films, often finding them average at best, (I only watched this one because my brother rented it,) but in the case of Crimson Tide, I have to say I'm impressed.

I enjoyed the fact that you were confined to one submarine, and knowing that the decision made within the confines of it's hull could bring about a nuclear war - it makes for a very thrilling and entertaining film. It imagine it must be difficult to produce such as powerful and exciting film on such a limited set, but it really seems to work.

The acting from both Washington and Hackman is excellent. They help to create a tension packed and thrilling film. The supporting cast is also excellent. The dialogue is pretty good throughout and helps to both build and maintain the tension. The enjoyment was enhanced by the fact that you don't know who's right until near the end.

Some special features are included, seven deleted scenes, an on the set and production featurette and a theatrical trailer. There nothing that special, but are still worth a watch.

Plenty of action, and real emotion. The film is intelligent and makes you think. It's the kind of film that keeps you glued to your seat. Definitely one that's recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tense thriller, 25 Jul 2006
This review is from: Crimson Tide [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
Director Tony Scott does an extremely good job in making this into a great thriller. When a film is set almost entirely on board a submarine it can't be easy to come up with enough excitement to fill two hours. Fortunately thanks to great performances from Hackman and Washington, and a great supporting cast Scott manages to pull this off. It's hard work building up the tension in the first hour without losing the viewer but it's achieved here thanks to a few action set pieces and a bit of pop culture dialogue that was added to the script courtesy of Quentin Tarantino. The last half hour or so is a real power struggle between the two leading men and it almost makes the viewer feel as though they're trapped on the sub with them such is the intesity of the performances. A totally solid and absorbing thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent intelligent thriller!!, 13 Dec 2002

This review is from: Crimson Tide [DVD] [1995] (DVD)
Crimson Tide was one of the best movies I've ever seen, combining action, drama, suspense, and great acting by a good cast. The rivalry between Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman is very moving and they keep the tension at a high rate throughout the movie. All the supporting actors turn in strong performances as well. Also, the superb soundtrack by Hans Zimmer perfectly captures the drama of the film. All in all, an absolutely fantastic piece of cinematography, with outstanding performances all round. This is a movie that shouldn't be missed.
