Although the Wondermints are the band who backed Brian Wilson on his orchestral PET SOUNDS tours of 1999-2000, the Los Angeles quartet aren't mere Wilson copyists. On their 1995 debut, compiled from three earlier cassette-only releases, they actually don't sound much like Wilson at all, other than a vague similarity between "Tracy Hide" and "Caroline No". Most of THE WONDERMINTS is lightly orchestrated, vaguely psychedelic pop pitched somewhere between FOREVER CHANGES-era Love and the more pensive side of Big Star. Singer-songwritersDarian Sahanaja and Nick Walusko seem more interested in moods than hooks, and so the subtle pleasures of the album might take a while to sink in, but when they do, you won't be able to forget them.

I bought this album after buying 'Bali' and 'the wonderful world of...' and it didn't quite meet up to my expectations. It is a rather over produced album, which detracts from its edge. It doesn't really compare to 'Bali' but it does have some very good tracks, such as 'Tracy Hide', 'thought back' and 'Libbyland' which has a distinct Queen feeling to it. It doesn't really show much of the 60's influences which give the later albums their identity. Much of this album is very easy to ignore.

The most annoying characteristic of the Wondermints is ably demonstrated by this album. They do reproduction power pop and close harmonies so well, that only the finest songs will support them. this becomes apparent as the album unfurls. Proto Pretty is a gem of a song - catchy hooks, great harmonies underlining a fantastic melody. But on this debut outing the song writing doesnt stretch much further. Fleur de Lys is great ; Shine - sublime but after that its more of the same. Good same - admittedly, but you start to want more variation, and even more simplicity. Richness on the palate needs cleansing from time to time or you get jaded with the opulence.
