Amazon.co.uk Review

Compton-born Artis Ivey Jr was well into his 30s by the time he made it big. Having served his time in old-skool rap acts like WC and The MAAD Circle since 1979, his breakthrough finally arrived in 1993 with the jubilant party anthem "Fantastic Voyage", but it was the Stevie Wonder-sampling "Gangsta's Paradise" which made Coolio a worldwide name, selling 4 million copies (the biggest-selling rap record in history) and earning him a Grammy.

The fact that success came so late to Coolio was audible in every groove. The mello yello melodies and rubbery basslines had more in common with the phat-bottomed P-funk he grew up on than the G-funk that was in vogue. And his been-there, done-that maturity showed too, especially on this, his third album, with cautionary tales about crack and guns. My Soul is littered with the obligatory guest spots from the likes of G-funk crooner Montell Jordan, rapper Ras Krass, Coolio protegés 40 Thevz and legendary soul harmonists The Dramatics, and sometimes bizarre samples. "Ooh La La"--which lifts from Grace Jones' "Pull Up To The Bumper" to superb effect--makes perfect sense, but the biggest hit here is an unfortunate relic from the rap/classical crossover fad which gripped the world in late 1997: "C U When U Get There", based on Pachelbel's "Canon In D", might be a little too saccharine for some tastes. -- Simon Price

CD Description

By the late '90s, Coolio began looking like one of the onlyrap artists that mattered. With Public Enemy out of the picture, the deaths of Tupac and B.I.G., KRS-One doing Sprite commercials and every body else too busy dodging bullets to make music, Coolio found himself the default king of Hip-Hop at the close of the millennium. For his part, it seems Coolio would prefer the role of good-humored Court Jester.
Coolio's stream-of-consciousness lyrics often follow disparate tangents to their logical (or illogical) conclusion, with rhyming the only prerequisite. Even so, he manages to get a couple of messages across, such as his comments on the duplicitous nature of the drug smuggler on "Nature of the Business"and his ode to true friends; "Homeboy". The serious nature of these topics is undercut by left-field touches like '70s R&B vocal group The Dramatics crooning "The Devil Is Dope". It's on the all-out party tunes "One Mo", "Throwdown 2000" and "Can I Get Down 1x" that Coolio's soul shines brightest. Rap, after all, began as party music, and King Coolio seems bent on returning it to those glory days.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great all-round album but maybe not for hard-core rap fans, 16 Feb 2004
By A Customer
If you are the sort of person who likes a bit of rough rap but also some more pop-like rap then this is for you. There are a few phat tracks to bump in your car like "2 Minutes & 21 Seconds of Funk" and "Hit 'Em" where the heavy bass-line will please hard-core rap fans. "My Soul" and "C U When You Get There" are also very good if you like a bit of a melody to your rap and somewhat meaningful lyrics in the latter make it a more serious addition to the album. There are several funky tunes that while not that great, make good "padding" to fill out the album - "One Mo", "Throwdown 2000", "Nature of the business". The "Devil is Dope" is also pretty good. A few of the tracks like "Ooh La La" and "Homeboy" let the album down slightly, hence it is not 5 stars.

Overall, some hard-core beats, a few good melodies when you are in a chilled-out mood and some funky tunes make a great album let down only by a few flops.
